Thanks to binderbot and co. - folks who rolled out had front row rooftop viewing! Afterwards the motor vehicle congestion was amazing, but cyclists were able to roll out just fine. It was amazing to roll to two parties and through all that gridlock in the time it took folks who drove there to go one block! This year I definitely saw more bikers (it was awesome to see families riding home!), maybe next year there will be even more riders... If folks who can, ride and walk next year, then those who have to sit in gridlock will benefit as well. Happy Independence from Gridlock everyone!

This crossed my inbox the other day courtesy of the fine folks over at Access4Bikes.com - Another glimmer on the horizon, crack in the brick wall or some other metaphor indicating that old paradigms may finally be breaking down. Specifically, they’ve been working for some time to permit limited cycling access to Bill’s Trail in Samuel P. Taylor Park to bikes. I’ve hiked this trail and personally support this idea demonstrating that well constructed trails can be shared by all users. It would make a really nice connector for mixed terrain rides, to be sure.

Letters of support are needed NOW. Deadline for comments is June 26th. IMBA is helping get the word out by mounting a National Campaign. You can go to the IMBA website and fill out their form.

Additional Information on the Proposal
California State Parks has announced a proposal to open singletrack for mountain biking in Samuel P. Taylor Park, Marin County. The agency plans to permit bicycle use on the 4-mile Bill’s Trail segment on alternate days and is soliciting public comment on the project.
This landmark opportunity is the direct result of more than three years of partnership building with the parks department by IMBA California, Access4Bikes and the Bicycle Trails Council of Marin. A successful opening of Bill’s Trail will set the stage for bicycle access to several other singletrack trails in Marin.

Bill’s Trail
Located within the Mt. Tamaplais watershed in Samuel Taylor State Park, Bill’s Trail winds through native ferns, wildflowers and hazelnut trees. It averages a reasonable 7-percent grade, and its six switchbacks provide riders with multiple views of the surrounding landscapes. While it is expected that bike access on Bill’s Trail will be limited to alternate days at first, the parks department states that this stipulation will be open to further review.
A small number of local hiking and equestrian groups have vowed to fight against any new access for mountain biking in Marin County, despite plentiful evidence that well-designed trails can be successfully shared by various user groups, and that mountain biking is a sustainable, low-impact form of recreation. “I think that, broadly speaking, the community of trail users in Marin is ready for this,” says IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward. “We have seen great success with our volunteer mountain bike patrol program there. Mountain bikers care deeply about protecting the gorgeous trails and natural areas in Marin, and we will continue working with like-minded groups.”

I don't know about you but as a bike commuter who RIDES to the beach and back this proposed 3 year closure of the Santa Ana River Trail between Green River and Gypsum Canyon is unacceptable. To add insult to injury, they are proposing a "temporary parking lot" for staging right on the middle of a class 1 bikeway! Orangeless County Planners need to get out of their motorized cages once in a while and become a bit more bicycle friendly in their planning. Call 714.567.7800 for more info and contact CalTrans District 8 and 12 and let them know this plan is unacceptable before we have to brave riding on the 91 to ride to the beach and back or bike commute from Riverside County to Orange County cities and vis-versa.

why is british racing green the new hot color?

How is it that this color came to be? I can remember 3-4 years back, the color in question used to be forest green, or some thing of that nature (pun intended). Now everything that has that darker than normal green, is this british racing color.

What erks the hell out of me about this is....

what the hell is so british about green? I mean, i guess technically, ireland is a part of "great brittan", however, i feel like green is pretty represetative of JUST irealnd, and not ALL of Great Brittan.
What KIND of racing are we talking here. This would put me high in the running for worlds longest post if i were to post every type of race that can be had.
Is it EVERY race? The answer to that is no. I've seen brittish teams race. They dont wear green. Unless they're from ireland. In that case, see the first bulletpoint.
if its a brittish race, are all participants forced to adorn THAT color? How the hell could you tell who the winner is, if everybody in the field had the same color green on?
why does every a-hole have to suggest it whenever green is brought up "no, its not lime green, its sort of a brittish racing green" or "im thinking chrome lugs, white bartape, and a brittish racing green headset"
Whenever it is suggested, the suggestor says it in a matter-of-fact sort of manner, like everybody should know the answers to the swarm of questions that the "brittish racing" part of the color brings up. Im willing to bet everybody is as perplexed as i am, but have just accepted it and act like they know (a social tendency that i have always LOATHED)

When i start frame buiding, i am specifically going to to make a norweigan racing pink frame just to piss people like me off, or to see if it can get the lames to make it trendy.

Santa Clause Ride

In Santa Suits for the toy ride. 4 riders per team Rider 1 in front, lays the bike down in front of following riders, the others 3 have to dismount and hurdle the bike that is down then the next rider throws down a bike etc. Teams of 4 - fastest team to clean a block with everyone laying down a bike and hurdling the others wins. It would be like hurdle the turtle only hurtling over bikes thrown down in your path. The first one to throw down has to get back on the bike after everyone else hurdles it and hurdle the next bike laid down by rider2 etc. - a thought to throw in the mix. Short game, gone as soon as it ends.

Update: Start time has been firmed up to 9:00 a.m. on the 26th.

~~Any interest in doing a multi-surface day-time ride out to the Loma Linda trails next weekend? The morning of Sunday the 26th was recommended by a potential participant, so that or Sat. the 25th.~~ Mellow ride out, mellow ride on the dirt. You don't need a mtn. bike or even knobbies for this. Somewhat fat tires are helpful. Hybrid type upright bikes would be no problem. Road bikes are even ok, but you may end up pushing them through the sandy parts. Making sure your bike is tuned up would be a good idea though.

Remember people: Any Bike, Anywhere!

Ride is about five miles on pavement and multi-use trail (Fern to San Timoteo Creek trail to Beaumont Ave.) to Hulda Crooks Park, and then up Scott Cyn to the base of the Jedi trail. If anyone wants to ride that, they can, but that's not really the goal.

Same as all RAR's, nobody gets dropped. Plan on having fun. Possibly getting lost. Food & festivities when we get back to Redlands (not that "Mr. go home early" would know, right...).

Loma Linda Farmer's Market is right down the street, if enough interest, we could cruise over there as well...

Huge Props to Mayor Cristman and Loma Linda City Council for coming to the point tonight where they were able to finally invite the public to enjoy the fabulous South Hills Preserve the City of Loma Linda has created over the course of 20+ Years! Just to prove it is legit, the blog image for this post is a copy of the commemorative Open Space Map offered to the public for the first time tonight! The new Loma Linda City Council has mighty big shoes to fill, may the force be with them as they continue efforts to protect and expand the South Hills Preserve. To the retiring Mayor Bob Cristman from the Jedi Riders our heartfelt thanks forever! See you on the trails! Ride On! I plan to make a regular schedule of riding the trails, dropping in on the Loma Linda Farmer's market for some organic produce and fresh crepes and pedaling home.

This would make our route more of a loop for easier regrouping post ride, and it may actually increase the rider number since our starting point will be more visible to all the hip downtown folk.

July's RAR and Independence Day align this year, so if you hate trying to drive anywhere near the University of Redlands to see their show, come on a ride around Redlands and up to U of R's Admin Hill.

Last year, the few of us that went got a decent view of the spangled red glares and got to snake smoothly through all the limping cars after the show.

It was pretty cool...and...well, a bit snooty too. : )

THEY WENT BIG! Loma Linda Council voted YES Adding 587 Acres to the South Hills Preserve!

Item E on the agenda reads: "Approve contract to purchase 587.16 acres south of Beaumont Road [City Attorney]" Looks like its the big vote for Scott Canyon and public access to Jedi Trail. Some of us are riding from Stell at 5:30 PM the more the merrier for this potentially very big day for mountain biking in Loma Linda! Session starts at 6PM.

Loma Linda City Council voted to continue the vote until next Tuesday, perhaps we need to create a Loma Linda City Council ride and make a regular thing of this... Still have high hopes and we've got some Sweat and Smog equity in the idea now 100+ temps and 140+ AQI - 100% by bike. Just ride slower so you don't sandpaper your lung with Ozone. Check back for another update.

Mark B. and I were there for the momentous vote! It was standing ovation when they took the big move and they will be discussing an initiative for the ballot in Nov to permanently place all 1700+ acres in a permanent open space preserve! Loma Linda went BIG for mountain biking in the South Hills, please thank them.

SEA NO EVIL Art Show

Its back and its growing. All floors of the Riverside Art Museum will be dedicated to art donated to raise awareness and funds for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. So, it was a good trip. Culver City's Art Colony did it right. A bit schmarmy in places, but overall, low-key and fun. All the artists I met were cool and accessible, and I feel a lot less shy about going to art openings.
As a matter of fact, I'm hoping to hit up the edwin ushiro opening on July 12th at Project:Gallery. There are a couple pieces at the current group show, and Ushiro's stuff was dang!

Tom Bowman - a grad from Johnston College and probably an RHS grad too is back to host a community forum and talk about how creativity can meet the challenges of global climate change. His team has been involved in all kinds of cool stuff and He is talking at Grace Mullen Auditorium at Redlands Senior High School from 7PM - ? I plan to roll over after work in the spirit of bike to work day, week, month, year, decade whatever and check it out. If folks wanna roll from Stell at 6:30ish it should leave plenty of time to get a seat. Going to this on bikes will be pretty cool : ) A flyer may be coming.

It was 1993 when I saw my first Salsa Ala Carte. My friend and bicycle shop owner told me about the Ross Schafer company and his crazy antics about bikes, fun and the "Ride and Smile" moto that is Salsa. As many of you know now i'm sure, Salsa was sold to QBP in 1997 but they have done a great job of keeping Schafers ideals in tact. This bike was my first great dream bike, and I have finally bought one 11 years later. Its a good quality steel hardtail, a real throwback with the ridgid fork. I may not be able to shred like I used to, but I will always remember to Ride And Smile.

apparently there is a ride on thursday that starts at stell, goes over to the new hanger 24 brewery, goes through a few rounds of beverages, then heads back. Starts at 6 however, i told resident sweet dude/bike guru/sexual tiger ben parks i would wait for him to get off of work to leave, which would be "no sooner than 6:30". Anybody want to join us? My plans include getting ben LOADED and cajoling him into helping me build my new cross rig, and possibly starting a spandex-laden barfight. Whaddaya think?

For a ride without a whole lot of planning, I think it turned out pretty well.

Had nearly 30 riders, and most seemed to be enjoying the ride.

Nicknames were bestowed, post-ride beverages were consumed. What more can you ask for?

Hard to tell sometimes what people want out of the ride though.

Should it be longer? Do we need to change the route up more? Is it good how it is?

John Baty had a great idea for this Fridays ride. Security guard willing, we can make a couple passes on the Redlands Classic critirium short coarse, its only .65 miles long. Bitchin idea I say. Only the Citrus Ave. section will blocked off to traffic, the rest of the coarse is open to traffic but we can handle it. Look forward to seeing everyone. Don't forget to spread the word to your friends about the ride.

Hey, i think trevor had an idea that we do a ride that ends at the bowling alley. I think thats a rad idea. Im pretty dumb when it comes to street names and stuff, so i think i could like make a route map on google maps, but, what i know i can do for sure is make up a flyer for the ride and hang em up at the usual suspects, and maybe make a post on craigslist...? Unless sombody calls me to tell me otherwise, im just gonna go ahead and do that. K thats all i guess.

About 20 or 25 peeps showed up at Stell, nearly all of whom nearly brought toys for the toy drive and around 15 of whom actually saddled up and rode.

We cruised though the residential areas of Redlands and dug holiday decorations and such.

Well, maybe not quite Santarchy, but the gloomy weather didn't dampen everyone's holiday spirit.

We had a small group (15 or so), of riders show for a cruise around South Redlands to scope out Christmas light displays.

Several people showed up with donations for the toy drive, but opted not to ride. Thanks to all those who donated, whether riding or not. The toys will be delivered, to Candlelighters in Loma Linda, later this week, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday. Contact redasphaltride@gmail.com if you'd like to come along.

I just wanted to make a post in tribute to Roger Bell. Roger Bell built the Santa Ana River Trail (the single track up in the mountains) and many other wicked trails we have all enjoyed, localy and otherwise. Roger is a Redlands resedent and just so happens to be friends with Johnathan Baty. I was interested in meeting Mr. Bell and John brought him up to the shop to say hi. Mr. Bell has a new book out called "Trail Tales" consisting of short poems and factoids about his many years of trail building, some funny, some indearing. He left copies of this wonderfull book at the shop (Cycletek). The next time you hit a sweet peace of single track, stop for a moment and think-honor the people that put the blood, sweat and tears into it.

The rain forecasted for this friday night's Slay Ride may ruin a lot of people's chance (or desire) to ride, but you can still bring a toy for the Toy Drive (all donations will go to Candlelighters).

Mustache Ride Contest

Hey kids, little heads up on the deal for November's ride.

As you may know, Movember is Mustache month. Therefore, for the Movember ride we're holding a little competition, for the grand prize of free beers (or other refreshing beverage), at whichever establishment we find ourselves at post-ride.

The rules are as follows (As adapted from movember.org).

On day "Mo-1" (Oct. 1), the complete moustache region, including the entire upper lip and the handlebar zones, must be completely shaved.

For the entire duration of Movember (Oct. 1 - Movember 2 inclusive), no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee zone - being any facial area below the bottom lip.

There is to be no joining of the moustache to sideburns.

Failure to conform to all of these rules may, at the discretion of the official Movember Committee, result in instant blacklisting and may void invitation to the Mo Ride. (Not really, but you'll be ineligible for free beers, and no one wants that.)

Redasphaltride Movember Committee accepts no responsibility for lost jobs, rashes, food/beer encrustments or any other such mishaps caused to the wearer (or his partner) of a Movember Moustache. You grew it yourself.

Contestants should submit face pics, (URLs accepted) dated Oct. 1, to redasphaltride@gmail.com.

Winners will be determined by a vote amongst all present, and fellow contestants will foot the bill for the winner's post-ride libations.

Ladies are encouraged to participate, and will be judged separately in their own category. For obvious reasons, ladies are not bound by the above rules. Ladies can draw it, glue it, tape it, or whatever works. Although if you *can* grow it and want to rock it Frida-style, then by all means do so.
